Tchaikovsky wrote this festival overture to commemorate the Russian Army's struggle against Napoleon's forces. The themes that are presented in this arrangement include an opening hymn, a pastoral interlude, a Russian folk dance, and a jubilant victory melody set over an exultant Russian anthem.
